The Kestrel 2500 with NV has a night-vision preserving backlight that limits blue/green spectrum light to optimize natural night vision. NV backlighting is much dimmer than standard backlighting, making it harder to spot in dark settings. 

This backlight emits a distinctive soft greyish pink hue, which lies within the visible spectrum, though it is incompatible with night-vision equipment. It takes an average of 30 to 45 minutes for the human eye to adjust to nighttime conditions, allowing optimal night vision. A short burst of white, yellow, green or blue light can "bleach out" the rod cell photo-receptors in the eye, leading to night blindness until adaptation occurs again. Red spectrum light does not trigger this "bleaching out", thus preventing night blindness and visual fatigue.
